Ilke's Davis Update

Post by Ilke »

ITEM!

Graphic Imaging Technology Inc. has just released the 40 Years of X-Men DVD-ROM. Included among the 17 500 pages of X-comics are Alan Davis' stints on Uncanny X-Men #213, 215, 366-380, 444-447, 450, 451, 455-459 and Annual #11. The DVD-ROM arrived in comic stores on December 29th, as seen in the 'New Releases List' at www.comiclist.com.

ITEM!

The Brave And Bold Art Of Jim Aparo, for which Alan provided an introduction, will be resolicited. My local comic store received a print-out from Diamond relating to late books, and this title was given a '2' code in reference to a pending resolicitation. The untimely death of Mr. Aparo earlier in the year was no doubt a major reason for the delay. Originally scheduled for an October '05 release, the new release date should be up soon at TwoMorrows Publishing's site at www.twomorrows.com.

ITEM!

The Maze Agency Volume 1 TPB, reprinting the Davis-drawn Maze Agency #0 (which first saw print in 1990's Maze Agency Special #1), has not yet shipped from IDW Publishing. Originally scheduled for a late November '05 release, the most recent proposed release date I came across was December 14th, but it did not arrive.

More to come!

Rebellion is scheduled to release the appropriately titled D.R. & Quinch: Complete Rebellion Edition TPB in February, reprinting every tale starring the troublesome twosome, including the 'agony' pages from 2000 AD #525-530 and 532-534.

ITEM!

While Avengers: Above And Beyond TPB is presumably still scheduled for release on January 18th, it is inexplicably absent from Marvel's website at www.marvel.com/catalog . This trade will reprint Alan's work on Avengers #38-40, and will have as its cover Alan's poster art from Avengers #36.

ITEM!

House Of M: Uncanny X-Men TPB, reprinting Alan's work from Uncanny X-Men #462 and 463, does appear at www.marvel.com/catalog , and is scheduled to be released on February 8th.

While the version appearing on Marvel's site is signed 'After Davis' (see http://www.marvel.com/catalog/showcomic ... rmat=comic ), the final, printed version of the cover has any such credit, as well as artists Brooks and Mendoza's own signatures, obscured/removed. The printed cover can be seen at www.milehighcomics.com/firstlook/121405/nx21cvr.html .

Alan contributed original pencil art for two cards in the Marvel ReCharge collectible card game, released in 2001. These illos. of the Avengers and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (seen on Alan's site at http://www.alandavis-comicart.com/image ... deCard.jpg and http://www.alandavis-comicart.com/image ... uts--t.jpg ) were digitally painted without inks for the final, printed cards. While the final art on the cards barely resemble the pencils that Alan provided, the cards are notable in that very few pieces of original art were commissioned for this set. The drawings of Quicksilver and Blob from the Brotherhood card also appeared in those respective characters' own cards, and a digitally painted version of Alan's drawing of Sunfire from the last page of X-Men #93 appeared on a card as well.

Here's a (confirmed) listing of the Marvel ReCharge cards which made use of Alan's art:

#49 - Sunfire
#65 - Quicksilver
#66 - Blob
#91 - Brotherhood of Evil Mutants Special: Crossover
#95 - The Avengers

(A full checklist of Marvel ReCharge cards is at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepage ... vrech1.htm )

Poster art!

- In 1985, a promo poster "introducing a new line from England's Marvel Comics Group" was sent to retailers by Marvel UK in anticipation of the release of Captain Britain #1. The poster featured the cover of CB #1 and an illustration of CB by Alan (with CB remarking "We're coming for you!!"), along with the covers for the non-Davis mags Starburst and Doctor Who Magazine

- X-Men Poster Magazine #2 ('93) featured a 1-page poster of the last page of Excalibur #67

- Regarding the Wizard posters already listed on Alan's checklist at www.alandavis-comicart.com/Checklist.html , here are the poster books they appeared in: Wizard PosterMania! '98 had the Fantastic Four poster (illo. from the last page of Fantastic Four Vol.3 # 1, without text), while Wizard PosterMania! 2001 had the Avengers poster (illo. from the cover of Avengers Vol.3 #38 )

ITEM!

Speaking of items already listed on Alan's checklist, here are some corrections/additional points about a few of them:

- In addition to publishing The Complete D.R. & Quinch in TPB form in 2001, Titan Books also released a hardcover version in 2004 ( http://www.2000adonline.com/?zone=repri ... quinch2004 )

- A more complete listing for Alan's interview in a 1998 issue of Tripwire is: Tripwire Vol. 2 #6 - JLA: The Nail cover and interview

- Unlike what was done for Essential Fantastic Four Vol. 1 and 2, Vol. 3 does not have an original back cover illustration by Alan. The back cover illo. was taken from the last page of Fantastic Four (Vol.3) #1

- The full title of the TPB reprinting X-Men #92, #95 and Uncanny X-Men #375 is The Astonishing X-Men: Deathwish

- The correct title of the TPB reprinting Uncanny X-Men #455-459 is Uncanny X-Men: The New Age Vol. 3: On Ice

- The correct title of the TPB reprinting Uncanny X-Men #462 and 463 is House Of M: Uncanny X-Men

- The complete listings for Alan's final 3 issues of Uncanny X-Men are:

459 7/05 World's end part 5: "Bad company." 22pp Writer: Chris Claremont Inks: Mark Farmer

462 9/05 "Season of the witch." part 1 23pp Writer: Chris Claremont Inks: Mark Farmer

463 10/05 Season of the witch part 2: "We're not in Kansas anymore!" 22pp Writer: Chris Claremont Inks: Mark Farmer
