Some more corrections/addendums to Alan's checklist:

- The back cover of Excalibur #7 did not feature a separate pin-up by Alan and Paul Neary - it was actually a wraparound cover by Alan and Paul

- The full title of the Excalibur Special from 1991, featuring Alan's pin-up on the inside back cover, is Excalibur Special: The Possession.

- In addition to the front card art, Alan and Mark Farmer also provided original art for the backs of the X-Men Series 2 trading cards (1993) listed on the checklist

Trading cards!

Lots of card sets have reprinted Alan's art over the years, so here are some I've come across:

- Wolverine Trivia (Comic Images/'88 ): Card #13 features panel 4 of page 8 from Uncanny X-Men #215; Card #14 features panel 3 of page 8 from Uncanny X-Men #215; Card #15 features panel 2 of page 19 from Uncanny X-Men #213; Card #34 features panel 6 of page 36 from Uncanny X-Men Annual #11; Card #37 features panel 6 of page 30 from Uncanny X-Men Annual #11; Card #39 features the first page of Uncanny X-Men Annual #11

- Heroic Origins (Comic Images/'88 ): Card #27 (checklist at http://abs-cards.net/checklists/ ) features the Excalibur #1 cover art, and can be seen at http://www.nosewheelie.com/marysgarage/ ... el1988.jpg . Other cards in the set likely to feature Davis art are #11 ("Captain Britain"), #47 ("Meggan") and possibly the Nightcrawler, Phoenix II and Shadowcat cards too.

- Excalibur (Comic Images/'89): This 45-card set featured art from the Excalibur Special Edition and the first few issues of the series. There's a checklist at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepage ... xcalib.htm

- Uncanny X-Men Covers II (Comic Images/'90): Card #40 features the cover of Uncanny X-Men #213; Card #42 features the cover of Uncanny X-Men #215

- Marvel 1st Covers II (Comic Images/'91): Card #54 features the cover of Excalibur #1

- Wolverine: From Then 'Til Now II (Comic Images/'92): Card #38 features panel 6 of page 30 from Uncanny X-Men Annual #11 on the front, while the card back has panel 4 of page 30 from Uncanny X-Men Annual #11

- Flair '94 Marvel Universe (Fleer/'94): Card #53 ("Deadly Enemies - Sabretooth vs Wolverine") features the cover art for Uncanny X-Men #213, digitally painted for this card. The card can be seen at http://wolverine.x-knights.com/fullsize ... ine136.jpg

- Flair '95 Marvel Annual (Fleer/'95): Card #92 ("ClanDestine - Family Business") features the image of Walter and Dominic engaging in a shouting match from The ClanDestine #2 (page 10, panel 5), digitally painted for this card. The card back reprints the cover of The ClanDestine Preview. There's a checklist for this card set at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepage ... vfla95.htm

- Flair '95 Marvel Annual (Fleer/'95): What I'm assuming is card #32 ("Phoenix - The Fate of the Phoenix") features the image of Rachel Summers/Phoenix from the last page of Excalibur #64, digitally painted for this card. The art has also been altered so that the Phoenix featured on the card is Jean Grey. The card can be seen at http://www.nosewheelie.com/marysgarage/ ... 5cards.jpg , while the original image from Excalibur #64 is on the 2nd page of the Alan Davis gallery at http://members.fortunecity.com/anvilfactory/

While Alan pencilled most of Excalibur #62, Mark Farmer did double duty as both penciller and inker for pages 10-13.

Frontispiece art!

- The frontispiece art in Batman: Full Circle (a detail of which appears on the back cover) was also used on a Full Circle header card to promote the book. Intended to be displayed on the racks with Batman: Full Circle to make the book stand out, the header card had the copy "The riveting sequel to Batman: Year Two. The Reaper returns to Gotham City."

- A frontispiece illustration also kicked off Excalibur #50, and was based on an idea by Sven Larsen.

- And who could forget the title page art from Detective Comics #575? Another great piece!

Promo posters!

- A poster was released to promote the release of Fantastic Four (Vol. 3) #1, and it featured the cover design for the 'Sunburst' variant edition of #1. This poster can be seen at http://cgi.ebay.com/Fantastic-Four-Hero ... otohosting

- Not to be confused with the '91 Excalibur Mutant Genesis poster, there was another Mutant Genesis promo poster with the heading "The Legend Continues - Mutant Genesis." Featuring X-Force, X-Factor, X-Men and Excalibur characters (as drawn by different artists), the poster made use of Alan's art from two sources: Captain Britain, Meggan and Kitty were from the aforementioned Excalibur Mutant Genesis poster (the original art for which can be seen at www.afn.org/~afn31010/jpg/ad_exc.jpg ), while Nightcrawler and Phoenix were from the inside back cover of Excalibur Special: The Possession (the original art for which can be seen at www.comicart-ltd.com/pages/excaliburad.htm ).

There's a montage sequence in Avengers #503, featuring reprint panels of a number of artists' depictions of the Scarlet Witch. This montage includes Alan's rendition of the character as well, reprinting his art of Wanda on horseback from the 2nd panel of page 6 of Avengers (Vol. 3) #41.

X-Calibre!

Amazing Heroes Preview Special #5, released in the summer of 1987, featured a preview of a little book called....X-Calibre! Here's the listing, as written by Robert J. Sodaro:
-------------------------------
X-CALIBRE

Written by Chris Claremont; illustrated by Alan Davis; edited by Ann Nocenti
One-shot; 32 four-color pages; 75 cents; newsstand distribution; from Marvel Comics Group

As part of the repercussions of (Uncanny) X-Men #226, this series will come to be. Actually, while it has been conceived as a one-shot project, writer Chris Claremont stated that if it goes over well enough it will be translated into a regular full-fledged series.

This team book is still in the planning stages and it's awaiting the final go-ahead. It will deal with Captain Britain and his cast and mythos, among other things. Claremont described the book as "the new Woody Allen Movie," or "The Cosmic Comedy Caper Book," saying that it was sort of devised in tone, if not content, from the Mrs. Peel Avengers with an I-Spy, Man from U.N.C.L.E., or even classic James Bond flavor to it. "It's high adventure and wit. All of the things I don't do well, but Alan does superlatively," Claremont joked. "We decided to give it a pilot movie, and it that goes well, we'll develop it into a series."
------------------------------

The above listing was also accompanied by the promo illustration by Alan and Paul Neary which later saw print in February 1988 on the cover of Amazing Heroes #134. Thus, the promo illo. was published in Preview Special #5 around 6 months before it appeared on the cover of #134.

Keeping on the 'X-Calibre' frame of thought...

In 1994, Marvel released a promotional 16-page comic called X-Men Ashcan (Dec. '94), meant to hype the Age Of Apocalypse storyline. The ashcan featured 1 or 2-page pin-ups reprinting art from such titles as X-Men, Cable, X-Factor and Wolverine, and one page reprinted Davis/Neary art from Excalibur #1.

And what was the new title of Excalibur for 4 months during the Age of Apocalypse storyline? None other than... X-Calibre. Full circle, one could say (no pun intended).

Note: X-Men Ashcan (featuring art from 1963's X-Men #1 on the cover) is not to be confused with X-Men Ashcan Edition, a comic released earlier in 1994 which recounted the history of the X-Men. The covers for both ashcans can be seen at http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/b ... &snumber=1
